Теперь же перейдем к подробностям.

Определенный или неопределенный артикль с существительными в единственном числе

1. Неопределенный артикль A/an употребляется с существительными или словосочетаниями в единственном числе, когда нужно классифицировать этот предмет, как вид, сделать общее представление о нем, не выделяя его:

a glass — один (неважно, какой) стакан
a table — один (какой-то) стол
an interesting book — одна любая интересная книга

2. Неопределенный артикль A/an употребляется с существительными или словосочетаниями в единственном числе, когда мы его упоминаем впервые.

Какой из неопределенных артиклей применять?

Артикль a согласного звука.
Неопределенный артикль an употребляется перед существительным в единственном числе, когда оно начинается с гласного звука.
Это одно из тех редких правил в английском языке, в котором нет исключений . Здесь надо помнить разницу между тем, как слово пишется (spelling ) и произносится. Посмотрите на примеры, обратите внимание на начальные звуки существительных, которые следуют за артиклями:

a b ook, a t able, a g lass, a b eautiful dog, a h istoric sculpture (начинаются с согласных звуков)
an a pple, an i nteresting thing, an u gly creature (начинаются с гласных звуков)
a u kulele, a u nicorn (начинаются с согласного звука «yoo-«)
a o ne syllable word (начинается с согласного звука «won…»)
an h our (начинается с гласного звука «ау..»)
an h onorable man (начинается с гласного «о..»)
an M BA («em-bi….»)
an S SO («es-es-oh»)

Это далеко не все варианты, главное помнить в данном случае не как слово пишется, а как оно произносится. Кстати в разных диалектах слово может звучать по-разному, поэтому и неопределенный артикль может быть разный. Например, Cockney , есть такой очень известный диалект в Лондоне. Они «ленятся» произносить звук h в начале слова, поэтому у них, например a helmet превращается в an ‘elmet . Английский очень музыкальный язык, в нем часто именно по звучанию можно ориентироваться, произнесите несколько раз слово, в котором сомневаетесь и с тем и с другим артиклем и вы услышите правильный вариант.

Определенный артикль the

1. The применяется после первого упоминания, этот артикль делает существительное уникальным, собеседники уже понимают, о каком конкретно предмете или явлении идет речь.

This is a box. The box is red and beautiful. (Это коробка. Эта коробка красная и красивая.)
We bought a house yesterday. The house is completely huge. (Вчера мы купили дом. Этот дом просто огромный)

2. The применяется со специальными словами, типа: следующий, верхний, самый верхний, самый лучший и так далее. Они делают существительное уникальным, поэтому уже при первом упоминании можно ставить определенный артикль the. Кстати the произносится как /ðə/ перед согласным звуком, [ði] перед гласным звуком.

This is the most important thing. (Это самая важная вещь)
Who is the next one? (Кто следующий)

3. The можно употреблять даже при первом упоминании, если собеседники однозначно поймут, о каком предмете идет речь.
Допустим, вы говорите о своем чайнике и решили рассказать о его крышке, она уникальна для этого чайника, поэтому можно говорить the lid сразу при первом упоминании, ясно, что вы говорите о крышке именно этого чайника.

I have a fridge in my kitchen. But the freezer compartment is quite small. (У меня в кухне есть холодильник. Но морозилка в нем довольно маленькая)

Артикль не употребляется — No article (также говорят ‘zero article’)

1. Перед неисчисляемыми существительными в общем смысле

Tables are made of wood (Столы делаются из дерева)

2. Перед множественным числом существительных, опять же когда упоминаем их в общем смысле

I have lots of tables in my house (У меня в доме много столов)

3. Перед именами собственными, большинством стран, названий компаний, городов и штатов:

Артикль не употребляется, если перед существи­тельным стоит притяжательное или указатель­ное местоимение, другое существительное в притяжательном падеже, количественное числи­тельное или отрицание "по" (не "not").

Неопределенный артикль a (an ) может употреб­ляться только с исчисляемыми существитель­ными, стоящими в единственном числе. Перед неисчисляемыми существительными или суще­ствительными во множественном числе неопре­деленный артикль опускается. Определенный артикль the употребляется как с исчисляемыми, так и с неисчисляемыми существительными, как с единственным, так и с множественным числом.

Часто, даже упоминая предмет впервые , мы тем j не менее употребляем перед ним определенный артикль:

а) если упоминаемый предмет является един­ственным в мире

Артикли в английском языке делятся на определенные и неопределенные . Неопределенный артикль исторически образовался от числительного one . Из этого следует, что он может употребляться только с исчисляемыми существительными в единственном числе (рис. 1).

Этот артикль имеет две формы: a (для слов, начинающихся с согласного звука) и an (для слов, начинающихся с гласного звука).

Случаи употребления неопределенного артикля

1. Неопределенный артикль a /an используется, когда мы впервые говорим о предмете и наш собеседник ничего о нем не знает.

Пример :

I’ve got snowboard and I like to ride it. - У меня есть сноуборд, и я люблю на нем кататься.

2. Для того чтобы классифицировать предмет или объект (то есть отнести его к определенному классу), также используется неопределенный артикль.

Пример :

My brother is doctor . - Мой брат - доктор (не учитель, не пилот, не инженер, а именно доктор) .

John sat down on chair . - Джон сел на стул (не на кресло, не на диван, а именно на стул, один из многих) .

John sat down on chair nearest to the door. - Джон сел на стул, ближайший к двери (определенный стул) .

3. Если предмет или лицо рассматриваются как один из многих, из ряда других аналогичных предметов (на что чаще всего указывает определение), используется неопределенный артикль. Обратите внимание на описательный атрибут.

Пример :

Look at her! She is beautiful girl ! - Посмотрите на нее! Она красивая девушка!

My friend drives red car . - Мой друг водит красную машину.

He has long nose . - У него длинный нос.

4. Неопределенный артикль используется, когда мы хотим указать периодичность действия, со словами, обозначающими время. В таких предложениях чаще всего используется The Present Simple Tense.

Пример :

I visit my doctor once year . - Я хожу к врачу раз в год.

My brother has English lessons two times week . - У моего брата английский два раза в неделю.

В таких ситуациях неопределенный артикль выражает значение «один ».

5. Неопределенный артикль также употребляется с такими словами и выражениями как:

There is little milk on the table. - На столе немного молока.

6. Неопределенный артикль используется с неисчисляемыми существительными, когда подразумевается определенный объем или порция.

Пример :

Let’s have walk . - Давай прогуляемся.

Can I have coffee , please? - Можно мне кофе, пожалуйста? (имеется в виду чашечка)

I had swim before breakfast. - Я немного поплавал перед завтраком.

The Definite Article

Определенный артикль the образовался от указательного местоимения this . Он может употребляться как с исчисляемыми, так и с неисчисляемыми существительными в единственном и во множественном числе. Трудности иногда вызывает прочтение этого артикля. Нужно запомнить простые правила. Если после артикля слово начинается с согласного звука, то артикль читается как [ðə]. Если же после него стоит слово, начинающееся с гласного звука, то артикль читается как [ðɪ] (рис. 2).

Случаев употребления определенного артикля достаточно много. Выделим основные из них.

1. Определенный артикль употребляется в тех случаях, когда объект или предмет уже известен или о нем говорилось ранее.

Пример :

I’ve got a dog. dog is black and white. - У меня есть собака. Собака черно-белая.

2. Определенный артикль также всегда используется, когда речь идет об уникальных существительных, единственных в своем роде.

Пример :

Earth is round. - Земля круглая.

Существительные в английском языке подразделяются на исчисляемые и неисчисляемые (рис. 3).

К исчисляемым существительным относятся предметы/объекты, поддающееся подсчету. Такие существительные могут использоваться как в единственном, так и во множественном числе, употребляться как с определенным, так и с неопределенным артиклем. Исчисляемые существительные могут быть как предметными , так и собирательными .
